Artisans: The Souls Keeping Craft Alive
Our journeys in India have made one thing very clear to us: the people behind a piece are part of what makes it precious. Seeing yarn handled and spending time close to craft has brought a different kind of attention to the way we think about clothing.
For us, handmade means time, judgement and knowledge. It means someone has felt the thread, made decisions and given a part of their day to creating something that will become part of someone else’s life.
Knowledge that lives in people
A craft continues because people practise it. A way of spinning, a knitting technique or an understanding of colour can be passed between generations, but it needs time and opportunity to remain part of everyday life.
We want to honour that knowledge while leaving room for makers to create, adapt and bring their own ideas to their work. A living tradition belongs to the people who carry it forward.
Why these relationships matter to us
At Essense, we work with Kullvi Whims, Porgai, Kiron Foundation and other artisans whose skills and traditions shape our collections. Each relationship brings us closer to the people, places and materials behind our pieces.
Supporting craft means respecting the time, knowledge and care that makers put into their work. It means listening, learning from one another and building lasting relationships where their skills are valued and their voices help shape what comes next.
We hope you feel this connection when you wear an Essense piece. Knowing something of the hands behind it can inspire us to care for it, repair it and cherish it for longer. For us, keeping craft alive begins with valuing the people who carry it forward.
