Natural Dyes: Colour, Patience and Ancient Wisdom
On our journeys in India, being close to yarn and the people who work with it has made us look at colour differently. We find ourselves thinking about where a shade begins, how it is made and whose knowledge gives it life.
For Essense, natural dyes hold a special place in that story. A leaf, a root or a piece of bark can become colour through a process that asks for patience, understanding and care.
The wisdom behind a shade
India’s traditions of textile colour reach back through generations. Indigo, plant dyes and the techniques used to fix colour to fibre carry knowledge that has been practised, shared and refined over time.
A dyer needs to understand the material in their hands. The fibre, the water, the temperature and the time in the dye bath all influence the result. Some dyes need a mordant to help the colour bind. With indigo, the shade develops as the dipped fibre meets the air. Behind a beautiful colour lies a series of thoughtful decisions.
Learning to love the differences
We are drawn to the subtle variations that can come with natural dyeing. A shade may shift with the ingredients or the way it is prepared. These differences invite us to appreciate the attention behind a piece, and to let go of the expectation that everything must look exactly alike.
Our love for natural colour also comes with a responsibility to understand how it is made. Thoughtful choices about plants, mordants and water are part of the care we value.
What moves us is the meeting of nature and human knowledge. Colour becomes something we can feel connected to: a material, a process and a tradition carried forward by someone’s hands.
